Our REST API exposes the metadata that members provide Crossref when they register their content with us. And it’s not just the bibliographic metadata either. Funding data, license information, full-text links, ORCID iDs, abstracts, and Crossmark updates, are all available, if included in members’ metadata.
Numerous tools and services rely on our metadata, be they for search, annotation, sharing, or analysis. Some common tasks for using our REST API include:
Many familiar brands use our metadata through this modern machine-interface. Check out the case studies from people like Authorea and SHARE.
Search, facet, filter or sample metadata from thousands of members via our REST API. The information is continually updated as members update and add to their metadata with us. The REST API helps unlock the value behind the information members are depositing, by making it available to query easily and to integrate into other tools and services.
No sign-up is required to use the REST API, and the data can be treated as facts from members. Therefore it is not subject to copyright and available to use for whatever purpose you may have.
A pragmatic solution to interrogate content, text and data mining simplifies access for researchers who want to mine and analyze research outputs and content. Because more science and research is being done programmatically, researchers increasingly need to access full-text content for data mining and analysis. Researchers need a way to avoid the hassle of negotiating individual bilateral agreements with publishers, and members needn’t negotiate bilateral agreements with thousands of researchers.
Members can include the Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) for their full text and access indicators (usage license or license waiver) along with the other publication metadata they deposit with Crossref. Including this information in the metadata makes it easy for researchers to access available content.
The transaction costs of text and data mining become less of a hurdle for both researchers and members, who spend less time making individual access arrangements and more time researching and publishing. Crossref does not charge a fee for negotiating access for text and data mining.
Here’s how text and data mining with Crossref works:
Researchers and text miners can access content URIs and license information via the Crossref REST API.

You don’t have to sign up to anything in order to use our REST API. That means we don’t necessarily know who is using it, although we see millions of hits every day. If you are using it in your projects and would like to share, please let us know and we’ll add you to this page. Here is a list of known projects that (to our knowledge) are using the REST API.
